DHFL Scam: Dheeraj Wadhawan Arrested in India's Biggest Banking Fraud: 34,000 cr.
Yes Bank-DHFL scam: Court grants 8 weeks' bail to Dheeraj Wadhawan | Exclusive

In a significant development, Dheeraj Wadhawan, a central figure in the Rs 34,000 crore banking loan fraud case involving Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd (DHFL), was apprehended by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This arrest sheds light on what is being touted as India's largest banking scam, with allegations of funds misappropriation from a consortium of 17 banks.

Having previously faced charges from the central agency in 2022 for his purported role in the fraud, Wadhawan's arrest follows his involvement in the Yes Bank corruption probe, where he was earlier detained and subsequently granted bail.

In parallel regulatory action, the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) ordered the attachment of assets belonging to former DHFL promoters Dheeraj and Kapil Wadhawan in February 2021 to recover outstanding dues totaling Rs 22 lakh. This move came after the Wadhawan brothers failed to adhere to disclosure norms, resulting in a substantial penalty imposed by SEBI in July 2023.

Kapil Wadhawan, the former Chairman and Managing Director of DHFL, and Dheeraj Wadhawan, who served as a non-executive director, played pivotal roles within the company's administrative board during their tenure.

Amidst legal proceedings, the Delhi High Court recently issued a notice to the CBI concerning Dheeraj Wadhawan's bail application on medical grounds. Following the rejection of his bail plea by a trial court due to health concerns stemming from spinal surgery, Wadhawan is currently recuperating at his Mumbai residence. Justice Jyoti Singh has instructed the CBI to provide a response to the application, with a hearing scheduled for Friday, May 17. Source
